I own an iPad and love to listen to Pandora. I find that the speaker on the iPad just doesn’t cut it at times and I dislike being tethered by wires to my desk while listening at work. I put a lot of thought and research into a solution that ultimately would make my iPad life a bit better. I own some pretty high end noise isolating earbuds and prefer using them over anything else while in the office. This in addition to my want to use the iPad with my home theater (audio only requirement) limited my search to bluetooth receivers with a 3.5mm audio out.
I cannot recall exactly, but the other options presented by Amazon (by no easy search!) were a unit by Motorola, an Acoustic Research unit, and some other non-Major manufacturer clip style unit. Based on the audio quality reviews for the Sony Ericsson model, I chose this product.
The product arrived in typical Amazon fashion (fast). I charged it for the recommended 8+ hour initial charge time and grabbed it on the way out the door to get to the office. My initial pairing with my iPad was straightforward and without issue. I’m fairly certain that the iPad has issues pairing with Bluetooth devices with consistent success much like the less than stellar WiFi connectivity that I get. I did experience a few hiccups trying to get the receiver connected after powering it off and leaving my desk for a while. Resolution was to turn off bluetooth on the iPad, delete the pairing, and retry. Since then I’ve not had issue and iPad Pandora life has been good. As stated in other reviews, the forward and back controls do not function with Apple products. When using the receiver, I’ve also noticed that pressing the Play/Pause button causes my Pandora stream to stop and my iPod iPad app to start playing. This is slighlty more annoying than not having any function out of the Play/Pause button.
My first day of experience with the unit for its office Pandora use has been good. When connected to my Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 EB earphones (owned for a few years), I cannot tell the difference between being plugged direct to the iPad or to the bluetooth receiver. The audio quality offered by Pandora simply doesn’t meet audiophile quality recordings (and I’m ok with that). I have already gotten mostly used to the volume slider reported by others. It definitely is not perfect. For my uses, I didn’t expect to get song information relayed to the receiver (and it doesn’t). Another note: the volume control on the iPad becomes unavailable when connected to a bluetooth audio receiver. The bluetooth receiver has sole control of the volume.
As I write this review after a full day of work, I see that I’ve drained only half of the battery level. I don’t listen for the entire day but do when I’m sitting still at my desk. I’d guess I’ve listened to about 4 hours of music off and on.
I’m interested in seeing how the unit functions at home while connected to speakers in the kitchen, study, and home theater. I imagine I’ll be very pleased with the result.
I don’t really have plans to pair the unit to my phone but after reading the other reviews, it seems I won’t want to replace my already owned Jawbone or BlueAnt headsets.
